There are objective, both graphic and phonetic, difficulties in transliterating the letters of Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Arab, and Jewish alphabets into latin (“western”) ones. Concerning the Jewish language, the three UNI 259 suggestions could make easier and uniform the relation between European languages and the Jewish one, but they are practically unknown in Italy, too. In this study these transliteration suggestions are examined and discussed. The text is equipped with a glossary offering the “simplified” (UNI 259-2) transliteration, applied to words much used in written or translated into Italian recent years’ “Judaics” texts.
